Applied Mathematics at Reading has an excellent research record in reaction-diffusion theory, water waves, numerical analysis, computational and theoretical fluid dynamics, applied analysis and control theory. It achieved grade 5 in the last RAE. It has strong research links with the grade 5* Department of Meteorology (within the new School of Mathematics, Meteorology and Physics) together with the Met Office and several industrial partners. Candidates for the Chair should have an international research reputation in an area of applied mathematics related to one or more of the current research activities of the Department. The successful candidate will be expected to make a significant contribution to the department's research output, to provide leadership for researchers and postgraduate students, and to undertake an appropriate teaching and administrative load. Informal enquiries may be made to Professor David Needham (tel 0118 378 8994, e-mail d.j.needham@reading.ac.uk), Professor David Porter (tel 0118 378 8998, e-mail d.porter@reading.ac.uk) or the Head of Department, Dr David Stirling (tel 0118 378 8997, e-mail d.s.g.stirling@reading.ac.uk). The Department's web pages (http://www.maths.reading.ac.uk/ ) contain further information. Further particulars and application form are available from the Personnel Office, The University of Reading, PO Box 217, Reading, RG6 6AH, telephone (0118) 3786771 (answerphone) email personnel@reading.ac.uk giving full name and address. The Center invites applications from outstanding candidates for the first of several faculty positions. The unifying theme for the Center is the study of complex systems through numerical simulation, the development of new computational methodologies and algorithms, data mining, and visualization. Preference will be given to candidates at the rank of Professor, although qualified candidates at all levels are encouraged to apply. Duties include graduate and undergraduate teaching, in addition to a vigorous research program. For additional details please refer to the web site http://naniloa.ucdavis.edu/CSE/. The position will remain open until filled, but to assure full consideration, complete application materials must be received by April 15, 2003. UC Davis is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer. ------ Subject: Postdoctoral Position at the University of Basel From: Marcus Grote Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 13:23:23 +0100 (CET) Two-year Postdoctoral Position at the University of Basel, Switzerland A two-year position as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Basel will be open starting October 1, 2003. The position is part of an ongoing effort to develop advanced numerical methods for computational electromagnetics. The research involves areas such as discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods and numerical methods for unbounded domains, together with applications in nano-optics. The candidate is expected to have or receive shortly a PhD in mathematics or applied mathematics with a strong background in the numerical solution of partial differential equations. Some experience with C, C++, FORTRAN, or Matlab is expected. Knowledge of German is not a pre-requisite. Interested applicants can get further information about the position by contacting either Marcus Grote or Dominik Schoetzau grote@math.unibas.ch schotzau@math.unibas.ch Applications including curriculum vitae, list of publications, a statement of research interest, and names of 3 references with their e-mail addresses, should be sent before March 31 to Prof. Marcus Grote Department of Mathematics University of Basel Rheinsprung 21 CH-4051 Basel Switzerland FAX: +41-61-267-3995 The search will be ongoing until the position is filled. ------ Subject: Contents, Physica D: Nonlinear Phenomena, 177:1-4 From: cdmailer@elsevier.co.uk Date: Fri, 14 Feb 2003 13:06:04 GMT For more information about this journal visit http://www.elsevier.com/locate/physd On the bifurcation curve for an elliptic system of FitzHugh-Nagumo type G.
