This progress has particularly highlighted the power of numerical and experimental simulation techniques, often combined, in the various phases of development, research, preliminary design and product/process development. It has simply become an indispensable tool to better master risks in automotive innovation. In this context, the SIA Subcommittees on "Simulation" and "Quality & Reliability" are organizing in October 2005 a 2-day international congress on "Fluid Dynamics Applications for Ground Transportation". Conference topics: 1- External Aerodynamics 2- Aerothermodynamics 3- Aeroacoustics 4- Injection Systems 5- Engine Aerodynamics and Combustion 6- Exhaust Gas and Aftertreatment 7- Multiphase flows Particular stress will be given on the following axes: Characterization of the problem and model planning, Simulation strategy with cost-effectiveness in mind, Integration of simulation in the development process, Solution robustness in relation to manufacturing demands, Technical innovations (algorithms, materials) and new applications. This is the second phase of the EPSRC/industry funded "Microscale Polymer Processing" consortium of 6 academic and 6 industrial partners. This post will be held in the Mathematics department at University College London. Other centres of the collaboration host further activities in physics, mathematics, computing, chemistry and engineering. This project will involve a numerical investigation into flow instabilities in polymer processing, working closely with Dr. Helen Wilson (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/Mathematics/staff/HJW.html; helen.wilson@ucl.ac.uk). You will create a numerical tool based on existing finite-element viscoelastic flow-solving code to evaluate the linear stability properties of complex flows. Using the tool, the mechanisms for various unsteady phenomena observed in polymer processing will be elucidated. Collaborative working with colleagues in the other academic and industrial centres will be a key part of this project. The starting salary will be point 6 on the RA1A scale: 21,640 plus 2,330 (GBP) London Allowance. The position is available from Spring 2005, and will be funded for 2 years. Further details and particulars may be obtained below from our website http://www.ucl.ac.uk/Mathematics/Adverts/HJ%20Wilson%20PostDoc/PostDocResearchAs+sistant.htm or from: Helen Higgins Department of Mathematics University College London Gower Street London WC1E 6BT. UCL Taking Action for Equality ------ Subject: Chair and Lectureship Positions at Dundee University From: David F Griffiths Date: Wed, 2 Mar 2005 12:44:28 +0000 UNIVERSITY OF DUNDEE CHAIR IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS The University is seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to the Baxter Chair in Mathematics, to fill a vacancy caused by the imminent retirement of Professor Roger Fletcher, FRS. We wish to attract candidates who have an international research reputation, and who can enhance the grade 5 rating in Applied Mathematics received at the last Research Assessment Exercise. We are committed to building on current strengths, which are in Numerical Analysis, Applied Analysis and Mathematical Biology. Subject to this, the quality of candidates is paramount, but we are keen to preserve the balance of mathematical activity, while strengthening connections between the different areas. Therefore, an ideal candidate will be a Numerical Analyst (or Mathematical Analyst) whose main area of expertise is in Differential Equations. LECTURESHIP IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS The University also seeks to appoint a lecturer in Applied Mathematics. A strong commitment to research and enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching and postgradute supervision are required. The person appointed would contribute to the existing strengths in Applied Mathematics as indicated above.
