Goldstein, University of Cambridge, UK Emilio Hernandez-Garcia, IFISC (CSIC-UIB), Spain Cristobal Lopez, IFISC (CSIC-UIB), Spain The interplay between biological organisms and hydrodynamic flows influences strongly the ecology of oceans, lakes and rivers, as well as developmental processes in living organisms. These phenomena at the interface between biology and physics cover different temporal and spatial scales from small-scale turbulence to mesoscale hydrodynamic activity on the physical side, and from bacteria and other cellular organisms up to swimming animals like fish on the biological side. The aim of this workshop is to bring together scientists from various disciplines who investigate organisms in fluid flows from different perspectives and to address, among others, topics like: impact of mesoscale mixing on biology, population dynamics in rivers, non-passive transport, experimental biology in fluids, bioconvection and the influence of small-scale turbulence on plankton. The general goal of the workshop is to facilitate cross-fertilization between the different scientific communities and to stimulate joint interdisciplinary projects among the participants. CIM conducts and supports research in applied mathematics and complex dynamical systems. Core members are based at the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Information Technology, and the Centre for Image Analysis. The center carries out innovative interdisciplinary research between the mathematical sciences and other areas of science and industry. The successful applicant will work with an interdisciplinary math project, involving at least two different disciplines. At least one of these areas of research should be in the mathematical sciences, which includes mathematical statistics, computational science and systems engineering. The second area of research should have a connection to complex and dynamic systems, such as those found in physics, chemistry, biology, economics, finance etc. Postdocs will be required to engage actively in the activities of the centre, i.e. seminars, scientific consultation and so on. The work consists of at least 80 percent of research and no more than 20 percent teaching. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact a host institution at Uppsala University to discuss potential research projects before submitting their written applications. The university is striving for a more even gender balance in its research and teaching staff, and women are especially encouraged to apply for these positions. The application deadline is April 1. For instructions about how to apply, see http://www.personalavd.uu.se/ledigaplatser/261postdok_eng.html For further information about the position, please contact Professor David Sumpter (david.sumpter@math.uu.se), Professor Kersti Hermansson (kersti@mkem.uu.se) or Dr. Elisabeth Larsson (bette@it.uu.se).
