Such models aid our understanding of how certain climate processes interact. Finally, they provide readily understandable paradigms for dynamical climate-system behaviour. The conference will focus on three topics: 1) the extraction of mathematical models from climate data and climate-model output (homogenisation, stochastic model reduction, bistability and metastable states, low frequency variability, data-driven coarse-graining, set-oriented methods, trend identification, time-series analysis); 2) reduced models and their dynamics (linear response theory, bifurcations, extreme events, uncertainty); and 3) testing hypotheses about the climate system using statistical frameworks (emulators, Bayesian methods, nonparametric methods, equitability). Papers will be accepted for the conference based on a 100-200 word abstract. Abstracts should be submitted by 6 May 2011 either online at http://online.ima.org.uk/ or by email to conferences@ima.org.uk Confirmed Invited Speakers: Daan Crommelin (CWI, Amsterdam), Michael Ghil (Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris and UCLA, Los Angeles), Chris Jones (University of Warwick), Jonathan Rougier (University of Bristol), Joe Tribbia (National Centre of Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado) For more information visit the conference pages: http://www.ima.org.uk ------ Subject: Meeting on Complexity and the Future of Transportation Systems From: Massimiliano Zanin Date: Thu, 17 Mar 2011 10:34:57 +0100 Call for Papers Complexity and the Future of Transportation Systems Satellite Meeting at the European Conference on Complex Systems 2011 Vienna, September 12-16, 2011 - One day meeting (date to be defined) Transportation systems are composed of a large number of heterogeneous elements, interacting, perceiving different information from the environment, and pursuing heterogeneous/different aims. Examples range from very well known systems, like road traffic dynamics, up to new fields, such as the Air Transport Network. Plenty of examples can be found in the literature about how different Complex Systems tools, as complex networks, percolation theory, self-organized criticality and agent base modeling, can be used to understand the internal dynamics of these systems and improve their performance. The aim of this one day Meeting is to create a space for exchanging state-of-the-art results and ideas on this interesting topic. Special attention will be devoted to applications, i.e., how those tools and techniques can be used to improve the performance of real systems. Contributions centered on societal and environmental aspects and citizens' perception will be especially welcome. What follows is a non exhaustive list of topics: Topological properties of transportation systems, and the relations between topology and efficiency / resilience / propagation of disturbances. Dynamics of transportation systems: from persons and vehicles, up to aircraft. Dynamics on transportation systems: diseases and information spreading mechanisms. Emerging behaviours and critical phase transitions in transportation systems. Citizens' mobility as the result of complex interactions between different transportation systems. Both contributed talks and posters are welcomed. Please hold the following date: 15-05-2011: Deadline for abstract submission, both for oral contributions and posters. Submission is done by sending an extended abstract (max. 3 pages) to the following email address: eccs11@complexworld.eu. Standard LaTeX or Microsoft Words formats are encouraged. Please be sure of specifying the type of contribution (oral or poster) you prefer. If you need more information, please visit the following website: www.complexworld.eu/eccs11 or directly contact with the organizers of the Meeting: Massimiliano Zanin (The INNAXIS Research Institute, mzanin@innaxis.org) Fabrizio Lillo (University of Palermo, Santa Fe Institute, and Scuola Normale Superiore, lillo@unipa.it) ------ Subject: School on Multiphase and Multiphysics Problems From: Luca Paglieri Date: Mon, 14 Mar 2011 17:17:52 +0100 The third Riemann International School of Mathematics will take place in Verbania - Italy - from the 25 to the 30 of September, 2011, on the topic "Multiphase and Multiphysics Problems".
