For the application forms and templates, please visit the conference website at http://www.mpde14.unito.it/ Contact emails: ezio.venturino@unito.it or mpde2014@unito.it This is the next annual conference in the MPDE series after several very successful previous meetings such as MPDE'10 (Leicester), MATE'11 (Colchester), MPDE'12 (Santa Maria) and MPDE'13 (Osnabrueck). MPDE'14 will focus on various aspects of population dynamics, ecology and eco-epidemiology and is expected to explore the processes and mechanisms ranging from the micro-scale of individual movement to the macro-scale of populations and communities, with applications to metapopulations, regional dynamics and geographical invasions. It is also expected to explore similarities between the modelling techniques traditionally applied in ecology and those used in other life sciences with the purpose to enhance interdisciplinary approaches and to stimulate further advances in mathematical ecology and population dynamics. The scope of the conference is outlined by (although not necessarily restricted to) the following topics: * population dynamics and ecological complexity * individual and collective animal movement * biological invasions and spread of epidemics * eco-epidemiology * models of collective dynamics and ecological pattern formation The program will consist of plenary (invited) talks, mini-symposiums, contributed talks and a poster session. The talks are expected to be mostly grouped around the above subject areas. However, we will be ready and willing to consider any submission of a potentially high scientific merit which does not exactly fall into the above list. The domain of application of nonsmooth models is growing to encompass a broad and challenging set of applications, including smart grids, large integrated circuits, complex mechanical and cyberphysical systems, and genetic circuits, which require the study of systems that are a lot larger and include many more uncertainties than those for which nonsmooth systems theory was initially developed. The main objective of this conference is to bring together researchers in applied and theoretical nonsmooth systems to share the latest theoretical results, to discuss novel and promising applications, to identify the challenges that lie at the frontier of mathematics and engineering and plan the most promising routes to a solution. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Local and global results on nonsmooth dynamics - Strategies for the analysis and control of hybrid systems - Dynamics of large or networked nonsmooth systems, reduction techniques - Numerical tools for the analysis and simulation of nonsmooth systems - Applications of nonsmooth models in physics and engineering - Deterministic and stochastic modelling frameworks. Authors of contributed talks will be required to submit a 1 page abstract by 15 May 2014. Accepted talks will be notified early in June. Student travel support requests and pre-registration (at a discounted rate) must be completed on or before 30 June 2014.
