The goal of the workshop is to gather researchers (computer scientists, engineers, mathematicians, physicists, chemists, biologists, material sciences etc.) working on different disciplines but all facing challenges in multi-scale and multi-physics as well as coupled simulations on HPC systems. The main focus will be set on computational issues regarding performance and suitability for high-performance computing. Furthermore, the underlying strategies to enable these simulations will be highlighted. Keeping these aims in mind, contributions from all aspects of engineering applications will be considered. Topics of applications will include (but not be limited to): Multi-scale problems; Multi-physics problems; Molecular dynamics; Multi-domain/Concurrency; Multi-scale and/or multi-physics modelling for biomedical or biological systems; Novel approaches to combine different scales and physics models in one problem solution; Challenging applications in industry and academia, e.g. multiphase flows, fluid-structure interactions, chemical engineering, material science, biophysics, automotive industry, etc.; Load balancing; Adaptivity; Heterogeneous architectures; New algorithms for parallel-distributed computing, specific to this topic. The research is a collaboration between Petia Vlahovska and Michael Miksis at Northwestern University. The position is for one year, renewable for a 2nd year. The candidate should have strong computational and analytical skills, and interested in working at the interface of biophysics, soft matter physics, and applied math. A PhD in applied mathematics, engineering or science is required. Please send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, summary of previous research accomplishments (2-page limit), plus the names and contact information of two references to provide letters of recommendation to: miksis@northwestern.edu. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. ------ Subject: Postdoc Position, Structure-preserving Approximation, Univ of Salerno From: Dajana Conte Date: September 29, 2020 The Department of Mathematics of the University of Salerno has published a call for applications for a research grant as part of the PRIN2017 project "Structure-preserving approximation of evolutionary problems" (PI: Prof. Raffaele D'Ambrosio, local coordinator: Prof. Dajana Conte). The deadline for submitting the application is set for 21 October 2020. The duration of the grant is 12 months. The notice is available at: https://web.unisa.it/en/research/research-grants/necessary-requisites?anno=2020&bando=3790 The application form must be submitted exclusively electronically through the page https://pica.cineca.it/unisa/unisa2020-adr059/ The research activities will be carried out within the PRIN2017 project "Structure-preserving approximation of evolutionary problems", which focuses on numerical structure-preserving modeling for numerous evolution problems in time, in space, with memory, deterministic and stochastic. The main activity of the research fellow will focus on the development and analysis of numerical schemes which, in addition to verifying the usual properties of accuracy, efficiency and stability, are also capable of retaining important qualitative properties of the solution of the problem in question, the geometry of the problem, any non-linear invariants. This investigation will involve deterministic and stochastic operators, with consequent repercussions on the peculiarity of the required analysis, as well as in the development of prototype mathematical software based on the produced numerical modeling. ------ Subject: Full Professor Position, Optimization and Control, Univ Bayreuth From: Lars Gruene Date: September 14, 2020 The Faculty of Mathematics, Physics & Computer Science at the University of Bayreuth is currently seeking to appoint a Full Professor of Data Driven Dynamic Optimization and Control at pay grade W 3 (minimum salary per month: 7,217 euros) to commence as soon as possible. This is a permanent civil service position. The incumbent will represent his/her subject area in both research and teaching. Applicants should have their research focus in the area of data-driven dynamic optimization and control or a related field. Of particular interest is the development of data-driven algorithms for the dynamic optimization and control of dynamic systems and their mathematical foundations, especially with applications in intelligent robotics and/or battery technology.
